Peace, Not Walls – An ELCA Initiative

Many walls stand in the way of peace for Israel and Palestine: walls of violence; of occupation; of political corruption and lack of will; of ignorance, mistrust, and fear of the “other.” We, as Christians, believe both that the gospel breaks down the dividing walls of hostility among people (Ephesians 2), and that God calls us to work actively for reconciliation in the world (2 Corinthians 5).

Daniel J. Lehmann
DANIEL J. LEHMANN

Daniel Lehmann, the editor of The Lutheran, the magazine of the ELCA, wrote a blog of his experience during the Bishops’ trip to the Holy Land.  Click HERE to read it: http://www.thelutheran.org/blog/holyland/.

The trip is part of a long planned journey to Jordan, Israel and the West Bank as part of the 2005 ELCA “Churchwide Strategy for Engagement in Israel and Palestine.” Its goal is to build relationships with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land , foster awareness of the issues there and increase advocacy for a just peace in the region.

The bishops were in the Middle East for a week in an effort to stress accompaniment with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, raise awareness of regional issues and boost advocacy for peace.
